Oh me oh my! What an incredible week I had last week, shooting literally thousands of photos of some of Cincinnati’s best and cutest families, kids etc!  From eensy weensy babies, to big kids and their parents, what a week it was!  Here’s just a sneak peek preview of some of the FUN we all had last week!

Huge SHOUT OUT and Mega-THANK YOU to Dana and Ben, who were my assistants.  Ben took some awesome shots – and Dana, as always, was the best assistant of all time!  Thank you to both of you for the help!

Without further adieu.. check out some of the fun from last week:

Photographing this family is always a treat – whether in Cincinnati – or here in Scottsdale!  I love it when my clients from Ohio end up vacationing in Arizona, and call me for photos!  I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Caleb and Campbell for quite some time now — and with every session, I just love them more and more!  (Plus it helps that their parents are really AWESOME too!)

I photographed the twins in Old Towne Scottsdale and then we went to the Sugar Bowl (haven’t been? I highly recommend it!)…. for some ice cream and of course, more photos!

While not exactly in Phoenix, I’ve found a new favorite place to hang out and have fun: Tempe Marketplace (http://www.tempemarketplace.com)
The big outdoor market is full of great restaurants, loads of off-the-chain shopping, and entertainment.
Be sure to hit Slices (http://slicespizzajoint.com) and Mojo Yogurt (http://www.mojoyogurt.com) for yumminess, then head over to Dave & Buster’s or the Marketplace 16, home of the largest movie screen in Arizona.
Become a Tempe Marketplace Facebook fan, follow them on Twitter, and sign up for the newsletter to get special promotions, deals and coupons.

We could not have asked for a more perfect morning to shoot this session – it was actually overcast (hard to believe here in the Valley of  the Sun!)… weather was beautiful, and look at how adorable these two sisters are!

I shot this session at the DC Ranch Market Street area …and really loved it!  I’ll definitely be heading back to Scottsdale to shoot here… so many possibilities!

Priceless Spotlight: Barry Kaplan, Real Estate Agent [Cincinnati | Local Favorites]

You met Barry in the “Jam-Packed July” edition of the newsletter and I wanted to share more about Barry here on the blog. He was such a huge help in selling our Cincinnati home – wish we could move him to Arizona with us but I’ll leave him for my Cincinnati friends and get to visit him when I’m back in town.

Barry says:

I am a lifelong Cincinnati resident, born and raised in Amberley Village. I attended Cincinnati Country Day School and Washington University in St. Louis where I received my MBA. My wonderful wife Ann and I reside in the Village of Montgomery with our son Gil who is a student in the Sycamore School District.

My real estate career began in 1987 with one goal: To be acknowledged by my clients as the real estate agent who creates TRUST by delivering services with the highest degree of QUALITY, VALUE and INTEGRITY.

My achievements include:
Cincinnati Area Board of Realtors: Circle of Excellence Million Dollar Club
Ohio Association of Realtors: Presidents’ Sales Club

To learn more about me, please visit AboutBarry.com
***************************************************************************

Working with Barry has been FABULOUS! With a husband who travels frequently, four small kids, and a thriving business, selling a home could be a nightmare and Barry worked so hard to make it as easy on us as possible. Fast results, great communication, helpful every step of the way, and just flat out awesome is how I’d have to describe Barry’s work. I was truly comfortable with trusting him to sell our home and that says a lot.

He made lots of suggestions on making our home selling-ready, looking at it as a buyer would see it. Barry listens and you know how important that is. I mean he really LISTENED to our concerns. He’s also very straight-forward and doesn’t snowball you with salesman fancytalk. That no-BS attitude is pure ME and something I appreciate! Give it to me straight, you know?

Thanks, Barry!

Secrets about Melissa [Phoenix | Cincinnati Child Photographer]

It’s no secret to my clients that I’m “nacho” average girl. No, really… please stop laughing. It’s true. But maybe you didn’t realize that one of my absolute favorite foods is – NACHOS! I like them spicy and mild, piled high and simple, Mexican style and other.

Here are some of my favorite local nacho haunts in the Cincinnati area.
Abuelo’s: Mason, Ohio
Colors Cafe

My nacho-lovin’ friend Kimberly in Myrtle Beach says I have to try these nachos too so after we get settled in Phoenix, a girlfriend trip is in the works!

Margaritaville: Broadway at the Beach
California Dreaming: Surfside (try the BBQ Chicken Nachos!)

I’m really looking forward to learning about nachos Phoenix-style so if any of you Phoenix peeps have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

Some Awesomely Cool Peeps [Cincinnati Family Photographer]

Laura and I have been friends since I moved here to Cincinnati, back in ‘01… when her middle son was just a baby…. and my 2nd son was about the same age… and now they are 7, going on 14… and we’ve since had more kids, etc…. I’ve had the pleasure of shooting this family for so many years, and have watched these kids grow into really COOOOOL kids.

We had the joy of shooting this session in the HEAT of the day – it must have been 200` in the shade (I exaggerate just slightly here)…. and by the time we were done shooting, I think we were all soaked from head to toe and in need of a shower….. but…. we did get some FUN photos…..

And before I share… a big shout-out to Laura’s husband, Mark……. Mark is a local hero.  He served in Iraq for at least a year… (maybe longer? I can’t remember…..but I bet Laura does…)… and was away from his beautiful children.  I remember he didn’t get home from his deployment until March… and Laura had left the family Christmas tree up so they could celebrate….. not sure why that has stuck in my mind all these years….but it has… and I thought I’d take this opportunity to tell Laura how much her friendship means to me, and to tell Mark THANK YOU for his service to our country…. just some way-cool-peeps!

Without further blubbering from me… here are a few of their pics from their most recent session…..

when good family portraits go bad... LOL..... bunny ears abound!

when good family portraits go bad... LOL..... bunny ears abound!

This last one makes me laugh — I had asked them to sit close to each other for a shot — and the boys immediately go into “bunny ears” mode with their little sister…. it happens all.the.time and I think it’s so cute…so of course I had to snap one…..

A Few Of My Favorite Things…

Hello loyal blog readers (and y’all know who you are!)  You’ve long asked me for  some “good” photos of my own children, to prove it can be done, LOL!! So the other night, I was feeling a bit down-in-the-dumps (hey it happens to everyone, right? I figured it was time to pick up the camera or a pint of Ben & Jerry’s.. so I chose the camera for once, ha ha).  So I told each of my four children to PICK THEIR OWN OUTFIT (gasp, shock, choke!)  My oldest son chose his typical every-day clothing.  My 2nd son chose a “nice” button-down shirt w/ a collar, and some jeans.  My 3rd chose an outfit which she wears all the time – one that’s comfy and that she loves – and my 4th chose her FAVORITE tie-dye dress. She wears this dress almost daily, whether we have time to wash it or not (I know, I know, bad mommy…but sometimes it’s just not worth the fight, and does the lifeguard at the pool REALLY care if her dress was worn for 4 hours y’day? No, she doesn’t)

So I didn’t pose my children, per se – I just asked them to have some fun with each other.  And here’s what I got:

This first one is of Josh and Ari, and our spaz-puppy Jake.  He’s a wild-dog, thus the ’shocker-collar’ around his neck.  Rest assured, we normally don’t shock him, we just “tone” him and that seems to be enough… except when he’s really excited and eating someone’s shoes…. which he does a lot…. 0045In our home, we call the boys’ Brothers for Life’ and this has always stuck — so when they are playing around and goofing off like this,  often-times they will chant “Brothers for Life!” or something like that…. I saw it on Super-Nanny once (the Brothers for Life phrase) … and I loved it – so I borrowed it. :-) And it stuck…
0049

This is Smushie… she’s effervescent and has me completely wrapped around her fingers.. …. and her crazy hair….0094This is Ari … just walkin’ down the slide….. 01620171And then there’s the “J Team” (Joshua and Jillian)… in our home we do things in teams – so each kid has a ‘buddy’ (I learned this from those crazy Duggar parents).  So the younger J (Jillian) has an older J (Joshua) as her “buddy” – and when we get ready to leave the house, etc… the older team member has to help their younger team member… so here I asked for a “J Team” photo…0173And of course my beautiful princess Jillian…. she’s the sweetest of the Kahn kids, and goes thru life at 1000%…0235Another “J Team” Moment…0191Jillian laughing……0227And swinging….9695And here’s my handsome little Ari….. 9727Just like we have “Brothers for Life”… we also have “Sisters for Life” … which is sometimes harder to achieve (the harmony, I mean…. ) but there are those fleeting moments when they actually DO love each other….. and play well together… and this night I was lucky enough to capture that….
9759Handsome Ari…9775Ari and Josh “monkeying around”….9778Jillian is always willing to pose for me… I love that about her, LOL!!!9795And here’s the “A Team” — Ari and Alana…. they are truly soul-mates.  They have a relationship that is so special amongst them…. it warms my heart all the time when I see them together…9820Alana, on the ladder. Notice the set of hands at the bottom right.  Those are Ari’s…. he wanted to make sure she wouldn’t fall…..9839Typical Kahn Kid behavior….9905The A team again….9938And the J team again…9960So…. thanks for looking at my kids’ photos…. now back to your regularly scheduled programming….

Secrets about Melissa [Cincinnati Family Photographer]

So judging by the email response, apparently you like learning my deep dark secrets… or at least where to get good ice cream! Here’s another food-related secret and a local treasure to match: I don’t cook. Ick, gross, blech, phooey. So when the kidlets are hungry and the pantry is empty and Mama needs to get a meal on the table (preferably someone else’s table) we head for Colors Cafe in Mason for some “Good Eats and Sweet Treats”.

Locally owned/operated by a cool husband and wife team, Colors Cafe features delicious homemade food (and ice cream!) served by friendly people in a kid-welcoming environment. Since I have 4 kids, this is a must!! Nothing like looking forward to dinner and being sneered at when you walk in the door with little people. It ain’t gonna happen at Colors Cafe, peeps.

Take a look at their menu here: Colors Cafe Menu Even UrbanSpoon gives ‘em a big snuggle for food and service: Review and Metromix Cincinnati lists them as well: Listing
